Parece que o S. Josemaria, durante as longas viagens de carro pelas estradas espanholas, trauteava as canções românticas transmitidas pela rádio transformando-as em oração. Naquela altura não era difícil transformar uma canção de amor romântico em hino de amor a Deus. Hoje em dia, este exercício é mais difícil devido à natureza explícita das letras. Apesar disto, de vez em quando surge um ou outro tema que se presta a este exercício.

É o caso de Reason do grupo Hoobastank que tenho tido oportunidade de ouvir na rádio nos últimos meses. É possível fazer download gratuito desta música nesta página. De seguida transcrevo a letra da música:

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Yesterday evening I submitted to the Vestry my resignation, effective July 1st. This was a very difficult decision for Christine and me. We have come to love Johnstown and the people of St. Mark’s. But we feel strongly that God is calling us to make this decision.

Twenty-five years ago, I was ordained into the priesthood of the Episcopal Church and into a vision of the catholicity of the Anglican Communion. The Episcopal Church has since become a very different kind of church. In the name of an ideology of radical inclusivity, the Episcopal Church has moved significantly away from the apostolic and catholic faith of Jesus Christ. With the decision made by General Convention two summers ago to approve the ordination of noncelibate homosexuals and the blessing of same-sex unions, it has, in my judgment, become heretical. I feel that I am a priest without authority. I cannot in conscience represent the Episcopal Church to the world, nor can I in conscience summon sinners into its fellowship. As a consequence I cannot function effectively as your parish pastor.

As my wife and close friends can well testify, my life has been an agony for me since the 2003 General Convention. I have struggled to discern God’s will for my life and for my ministry. I have had to reassess my understanding of the Church from the ground up. I have finally concluded that I cannot in conscience remain an Episcopalian. I must be in the Church founded by Christ Jesus. It is thus my intention to enter into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

I hope and pray that I leave St. Mark’s stronger than when I came. Our level of stewardship has increased over 30%. We have completed an ambitious capital funds drive, receiving pledged commitments of almost $280,000. If we also include the anonymous gift of air-conditioning for the church and the Pennsylvania state grant for the bell tower, we have raised approximately $400,000. We can be very proud of this!

But even more importantly we have grown spiritually. The Alpha Course has had a powerful impact upon our spiritual and communal life. The name of Jesus has been exalted. The Spirit has moved in our hearts. Fellowship has been strengthened. My only regret is that we have not been able to grow our parish numerically.

Christine and I are very grateful for the friendships we have formed here at St. Mark’s. It has been a privilege being a part of this parish community. Please know that we pray for the Lord’s abundant blessings upon each of you and upon St Mark’s Church. We ask for your prayers as we begin this new chapter in our lives.

St. Mark’s is fortunate to dwell within an orthodox diocese with a godly bishop. I urge you to follow his counsel and leadership.

If I have hurt or offended anyone, I ask for your forgiveness.

Da 1ª leitura de hoje (Livro de Eclesiástico 5,1-8):

Não digas: «A misericórdia do Senhor é grande, Ele terá compaixão da multidão dos meus pecados!», porque nele a misericórdia e a ira caminham juntas; e o seu furor cairá sobre os pecadores. Não tardes em te converter ao Senhor, não adies, de dia para dia, porque a ira do Senhor virá de repente, e Ele te fará perecer no dia do castigo.

S. Gregório Magno comenta esta passagem da seguinte forma:

...there is an even worst form of presumption--that of those who take the goodness and mercy of God for granted, who sin without fear of punishment, who see no value in repentance, who do not heed the call to conversion and penance.

We need to guard against such attitude, for it betokens a lack of faith...(St Gregory the Great, "Moralia in lob", 5, 35).

E o Evangelho de hoje (Mc 9,41-50) parece especialmente dedicado aos funcionários do Ministério da Educação:

...se alguém escandalizar um destes pequeninos que crêem em mim, melhor seria para ele atarem-lhe ao pescoço uma dessas mós que são giradas pelos jumentos, e lançarem-no ao mar...

...sendo que a alternativa é serem lançados na Geena...

O comentário da Bíblia de Navarra sobre esta passagem é o seguinte:

"Scandal is anything said, done or omitted which leads another to commit sin" ("St Pius X Catechism", 417). Scandal is called, and is, diabolical when the aim of the scandal-giver is to provoke his neighbor to sin, understanding sin as offense against God. Since sin is the greatest of all evils, it is easy to understand why scandal is so serious and, therefore, why Christ condemns it so roundly. Causing scandal to children is especially serious, because they are so less able to defend themselves against evil. What Christ says applies to everyone, but especially to parents and teachers, who are responsible before God for the souls of the young.

P.S.2 "Gehenna" or "Ge-hinnom", was a little valley south of Jerusalem, outside the walls and below the city. For centuries it was used as the city dump. Usually garbage was burned to avoid it being a focus of infection. Gehenna was, proverbially, an unclean and unhealthy place: our Lord used this to explain in a graphic way the unquenchable fire of hell.

O mal converte-se no nosso «bem» mais urgente, no nosso mais profundo anseio; o bem apresenta-se como um «mal» porque ameaça afastar-nos da satisfação dos nossos desejos ilícitos. Surgiu recentemente uma polémica sobre os conteúdos dos programas das aulas de educação sexual em Portugal.

Problema menor.

Sarsfield Cabral prefere dedicar a sua crónica de hoje aos programas escolares do Estado do Kansas !

A crónica termina da seguinte forma:

A ideia superficial de que os americanos são muito religiosos deve ser repensada.

De facto, é tempo de enviar os "católicos europeus cultos" em Missão aos EUA para tentarem converter os pagãos americanos.

Iliteracia

Na crónica referida no post anterior, Sarsfield Cabral refere a dado passo que "nenhum católico europeu culto faz uma leitura literal da Bíblia".

A existirem católicos europeus, estes não serão de certeza cultos visto que a cultura moderna liberta os espíritos de superstições e crendices medievais. Mas, a existirem católicos europeus - cultos ou incultos -, tenho dúvidas que sejam muitos. E tenho a certeza que os que existem não leiem a Bíblia com muita frequência.

Mas aqueles que o fizerem deverão levar em conta o que diz o Catecismo sobre esta questão, nomeadamente sobre o sentido literal ("116 The literal sense is the meaning conveyed by the words of Scripture and discovered by exegesis, following the rules of sound interpretation: "All other senses of Sacred Scripture are based on the literal"). O Catecismo não é tão peremptório como o Sarsfield Cabral.

Quem tiver mais tempo poderá dedicar-se à leitura deste documento da Comissão Pontíficia Bíblica que tem por título The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church.

P.S. Uma explicação de Pio XII: "o sentido literal da Sagrada Escritura e sua exposição, que tantos e tão exímios exegetas, sob a vigilância da Igreja, elaboraram, deve ceder lugar, segundo essas falsas opiniões, a uma nova exegese a que chamam simbólica ou espiritual; por meio dela, os livros do Antigo Testamento, que seriam atualmente na Igreja uma fonte fechada e oculta, se abririam finalmente para todos. Dessa maneira, afirmam, desaparecerão todas as dificuldades que somente encontram os que se atêm ao sentido literal das Escrituras.

24. Todos vêem quanto se afastam essas opiniões dos princípios e normas de hermenêutica justamente estabelecidos por nossos predecessores de feliz memória, Leão XIII, na encíclica Providentissimus, e Bento XV, na encíclica Spiritus Paraclitus, e também por nós mesmo, na encíclica Divino Afflante Spiritu."

Evolucionismo

Na sua habitual crónica no DN, Sarsfield Cabral afirma:

A Igreja Católica não tem problemas com as ideias de Darwin, que são geralmente aceites na comunidade científica mundial

Acontece que as ideias de Darwin foram já sujeitas a tantas evoluções que até é possível defender que nem a comunidade científica aceita já as ideias do senhor!

Façamos a caridade de pensar que Sarsfield Cabral se referia de forma mais lata à questão do evolucionismo.

Mas, mesmo neste caso, será necessário separar o trigo do joio. João Paulo, o Grande, ensina:

"...rather than the theory of evolution, we should speak of several theories of evolution. On the one hand, this plurality has to do with the different explanations advanced for the mechanism of evolution, and on the other, with the various philosophies on which it is based. Hence the existence of materialist, reductionist, and spiritualist interpretations. What is to be decided here is the true role of philosophy and, beyond it, of theology.

...theories of evolution which, in accordance with the philosophies inspiring them, consider the mind as emerging from the forces of living matter, or as a mere epiphenomenon of this matter, are incompatible with the truth about man. Nor are they able to ground the dignity of the person.

E quanto ao livro do Génesis, o Papa Pio XII ensina:

"...os onze primeiros capítulos do Gênesis, embora não concordem propriamente com o método histórico usado pelos exímios historiadores greco-latinos e modernos, não obstante, pertencem ao gênero histórico em sentido verdadeiro, que os exegetas hão de investigar e precisar; e que os mesmos capítulos, com estilo singelo e figurado, acomodado à mente do povo pouco culto, contêm as verdades principais e fundamentais em que se apóia a nossa própria salvação, bem como uma descrição popular da origem do gênero humano e do povo escolhido...se os antigos hagiógrafos tomaram alguma coisa das tradições populares (o que se pode certamente conceder), nunca se deve esquecer que eles assim agiram ajudados pelo sopro da divina inspiração, a qual os tornava imunes de todo erro ao escolher e julgar aqueles documentos.

Blasfemos cultos precisam-se

No Expresso do fim-de-semana um dos críticos cinematográficos comparava Darth Vader a Jesus Cristo !

A dado passo, o crítico referia que ambos tanto Darth Vader como Jesus Cristo tinham em comum a Imaculada Conceição.

Acontece que a Imaculada COnceição não é a mesma coisa que a Concepção Virginal. Nem nada que se pareça.

Num outro texto de uma das revistas do Expresso, texto esse que Eu não tive oportunidade de ler com cuidado, colocava-se em causa a transubstanciação.

Quem tem dúvidas sobre a transubstanciação que leia o Capítulo 6 do Evangelho de S. João e a narração da instituição da Eucarístia.

Repare-se, em particular, nas diferenças entre o comportamento dos discípulos que consideravam escandalosas as palavras de Jesus (Jo 6, 66), e o comportamento dos Apóstolos.

E retirem-se as necessárias conclusões.

Deixai baptizar as criancinhas

No DN de hoje, o Professor César das Neves explica, mais uma vez, que:

... os que lutam pela legalização do aborto estão convencidos de que defendem a mais elevada justiça perante forças obscurantistas e retrógradas. No entanto, são eles quem obscurece o problema, ocultando dois elementos centrais da questão a vida do bebé, evidentemente envolvida, e o tremendo drama futuro do remorso da mãe que abortou.

Estas duas questões, apesarem de terem consequências morais, não são propriamente religiosas. São verdades científicas.

A estas duas verdades científicas, junta-se agora um terceiro resultado 'estatístico' revelado em artigo do Telegraph:

A French study of 2,837 births - the first to investigate the link between terminations and extremely premature births - found that mothers who had previously had an abortion were 1.7 times more likely to give birth to a baby at less than 28 weeks' gestation. Many babies born this early die soon after birth, and a large number who survive suffer serious disability.

Por outro lado, no Catholic Culture discute-se uma das questões religiosas levantadas pelo aborto: A QUESTÃO DA SALVAÇÃO DAS ALMAS DAQUELES QUE MORREM SEM BAPTISMO.

Nestes poucos dias que separaram a morte de João Paulo Magno da eleição de Bento XVI, o germe da desunião desenvolveu-se com grande velocidade.

A vacina mais eficaz contra este mal é o Papa.

Também por essa razão, a eleição do Papa, qualquer que ele fosse, seria sempre uma boa notícia; seria sempre motivo para dar-mos graças a Deus.

Mas a eleição deste Papa em particular constitui, para este membro do Unofficial Ratzinger Fan Club, motivo de alegria redobrada...mais uma prova da existência de Deus...;)
